November is here, which means it’s about to get busy for all of us here in South Carolina. Weather changes, holidays, plans being made–you may feel pretty overwhelmed! The last thing on your mind may be how to ensure your car is ready for winter. But don't worry! Though our Winters are mild, our holiday season is bustling! We've a few simple tips to help keep your car running smoothly through what can be the busiest month of the year and keep it prepped for the season ahead.
Assess your tires.
When it comes to tires, you want to ensure your vehicle has a set that will get them through the winter. You should be on the lookout for any significant changes in the following two things:
If you've had your current set of tires for more than three years, it's time for replacements, but this isn’t a hard and fast rule. In fact, you may need to replace them earlier depending on how much you’ve been driving. While some wear is normal, excessive wear can lead to dangerous driving conditions, such as hydroplaning, when water accumulates between the treads of older tires.
Get an oil change.
It's essential to change your oil regularly. Your engine can't function properly without it, and if you don't change the oil on time, you risk engine failure. That's why we recommend getting an oil change at least every 3 months or 5,000 miles (whichever comes first). In addition to keeping your car running smoothly and efficiently, an oil change can help prevent fires and save money on maintenance costs down the road.
Think ahead.
Car maintenance is vital for all drivers, especially if your holiday plans take you somewhere with heavy snow or rain. If you want to avoid slipping and sliding on the roads, do your part by keeping your tires inflated properly. You may want to look into all-season or winter tires if traveling to a snow-bound area. New tires, windshield wipers, or even a heater repair may be in the cards! It’s better to do this now, at the beginning of the holiday season, than at the end.
